Terms of Service
These Terms are between you and the operator of Ontology Studio ("Ontology Studio", "we", "us"). By using Ontology Studio (the "Service"), you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
1. Description of Service
Ontology Studio provides a visual editor for OWL/RDF ontologies, available as a free web app at app.ontology.studio and as a desktop application.
2. Permitted Use
Subject to these Terms, we grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to access and use the Service for your personal or internal business purposes.
You may not:
- Scrape, copy, or systematically extract data or content from the Service
- Use the Service to copy, replicate, or create a substantially similar product using Ontology Studio's proprietary software, interface, documentation, or non-public materials
- Reverse-engineer, decompile, or disassemble any part of the Service (except where required by law)
- Access the Service by automated means without our prior written permission
- Resell or sublicense access to the Service
3. Your Content
You retain full ownership of all ontology files and data you create or import using the Service. We do not claim ownership of your content. Ontology Studio does not store your ontology files on its own servers. Your files remain on your device or in your own cloud storage, such as Google Drive, depending on how you choose to use the Service.
By using the AI Advisor, you send queries to your chosen AI provider (Anthropic, Google, or OpenAI) under your own API key and their terms of service. Ontology Studio does not process or store those queries.
4. Your Responsibility for Backups
You are responsible for maintaining backups of your ontology files and other content. Because Ontology Studio does not store your ontology files on its own servers, we may not be able to recover lost, corrupted, or deleted files.
5. Professional Responsibility
Ontology Studio is a software tool for creating, editing, visualising, and analysing ontology files. It does not provide legal, medical, regulatory, scientific, or other professional advice. You are responsible for reviewing, validating, and backing up your ontology files and any outputs generated by the Service, including AI Advisor outputs.
6. Acceptable Use
You agree not to use the Service to:
- Violate any applicable law or regulation
- Infringe the intellectual property rights of others
- Distribute malware or malicious code
- Attempt to gain unauthorised access to any system or network
- Interfere with or disrupt the Service or its infrastructure
7. Intellectual Property
The Ontology Studio name, logo, and all underlying software are proprietary and protected by copyright and other intellectual property laws. Nothing in these Terms transfers any intellectual property rights to you beyond the access right granted in §2.
Open-source components included in the Service are licensed under their respective open-source licences.
8. Third-Party Services
The Service integrates with or depends on third-party services:
- Google — optional Google Drive sync (OAuth)
- Sentry — error monitoring
- PostHog — usage analytics (opt-in)
- Your AI provider — AI Advisor queries via your own API key
We are not responsible for the availability, accuracy, or practices of any third-party service. Your use of those services is governed by their own terms.
9. Disclaimers
The Service is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service will be error-free, uninterrupted, or meet your specific requirements.
10. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Ontology Studio's total liability to you for any claim arising from these Terms or your use of the Service shall not exceed CHF 100.
In no event shall Ontology Studio be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including loss of data, loss of profits, business interruption, or loss of goodwill, even if advised of the possibility of such damages.
Nothing in these Terms limits or excludes liability that cannot be limited or excluded under applicable law, including liability for unlawful intent or gross negligence.
11. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Ontology Studio from any claims, damages, or expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your use of the Service, your content, or your breach of these Terms.
12. Termination
We may suspend or terminate your access to the Service if you breach these Terms, with or without notice. On termination, your access ends immediately. Sections 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, and 11 survive termination.
13. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of Switzerland, except where mandatory consumer protection laws in your country of residence provide otherwise. Any disputes shall be subject to the jurisdiction of the Swiss courts, unless applicable law requires a different forum.
14. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. We will notify you by email at least 14 days before material changes take effect. Continued use of the Service after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
